Guy's Story
Supporting recovery from mental illness | Breaking the cycle of homelessness

Mind supports people with mental illness in their recovery, to help them live well in the community, with or without symptoms. We work with people who have a range of often complex issues resulting from mental illness, and their families and carers, and have been doing this work for over 30 years in Victoria and now for more than four years in South Australia.

  • Mind is very proud to promote the upcoming "Unfinished Business - Pathways to Social Inclusion", a VICSERV conference which is taking place from April 29-30, 2010. The conference will focus on pathways to greater social inclusion for people with a mental illness. It will also showcase the excellent work occurring across different sectors, present the latest research into what works, and point to the way forward. This years conference will feature international keynote speakers Gregor Henderson and Tina Minkowitz with a focus on Inspiration, Determination and Aspiration.  If you would like to regester for this conference, or to find out more please visit the link below:

  • New Mental Health Line launched
    The Mental Health Advice Line is a statewide Victorian phone service that provides immediate, expert mental health advice from a registered mental health professional, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. By calling one statewide number – 1300 280 737 – Victorians of all ages and backgrounds will now have speedy access to clear expert advice, referral and information about the full spectrum of mental health issues.  Calls from anywhere in Victoria are charged at the cost of a local call (mobile phones may be charged at a higher rate).

    The Mental Health Advice Line is one of the initiatives under the Because Mental Health Matters: Victorian Mental Health Reform Strategy 2009-2010. It was established in response to the low level of knowledge about mental health problems in the community – people do not always know who to turn to for help. This new service is designed to complement the existing service system and will be delivered by the same organisation that delivers the NURSE-ON-CALL service.   • Strength of Mind - A Report on Mind in South Australia (October 2009)
    In October 2009, the Mind Board held its first meeting in South Australia.  This was an important event, and was followed by a presentation of the work of Mind to the local South Australian community.  Over 100 people attended, with Mons. David Cappo, Social Inclusion Commissioner SA speaking about Mind and the importance of the non-government sector in the delivery of community services for people experiencing mental health issues.  This was followed by speeches from the Mind CEO, Gerry Naughtin and the Mind General Manager SA, Dorothy Belperio. The evening ended with Trudi, mother of a Mind client, talking about her experiences of supporting an adult child with serious mental health issues and the important role Mind has had in supporting her and her family.

  • Mind releases 2008/2009 Annual Report
    2008/2009 has been a year of strong performance for Mind. Our latest Annual Report outlines our performance over the past year and highlights Mind's community of partnerships and relationships in the mental health sector, our staff and consumers. 

    The year has been one of great achievement and support. We thank our many supporters.

  • Mind supports community reintegration as a recognised path to mental health recovery
    The recent deaths at the Thomas Embling Hospital are unfortunate tragedies. However, this incident should not be used to de-rail an effective process supporting people with complex mental health needs.

    Dr Gerry Naughtin, Chief Executive Officer, Mind, said: “The practice of community integration is an important part of the recovery path for people with serious mental illness. This incident is tragic, but should not divert the Brumby Government from continuing with this policy. However, the Government review should be used as an opportunity to improve the risk management approach for community discharge for higher-risk mentally ill people.”

  • Mind launches strategic plan consultation papers 
    Mind is currently developing its 2010-2014 strategic plan.  This involves a thorough investigation of what we do, what we could do better, and what opportunities and risks might be apparent in not only future possibilities but also within current program offerings. We are seeking open participation and invite you to view our consultation papers and contribute to our survey.

  • Mind recognised at 2009 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards
    Mind was recognised for providing outstanding service in response to the 2009 Victorian bushfires by the Premier John Brumby, at the     2009 Victorian Public Healthcare Awards. In response to the bushfires, staff demonstrated strong concern for clients, capacity to organise quickly, sensitivity to colleagues who had lost their homes and experienced tragedy and a willingness to go out of their way to assist bushfires victims.
