Mind works with people experiencing serious mental health issues, their families and carers and stands beside them when they need it most. The staff at Mind provide practical and emotional support to people so they can take control of their lives, foster self-belief and develop the skills to face life’s challenges and opportunities. This may include learning to control symptoms, getting back to school or work, participating in social activities, developing trusting relationships and reconnecting with family and friends. Your support through becoming a member of iMind will help us to break the devastating cycle of mental illness. Mind is constantly developing innovative programs to meet the needs of its clients and the needs of the broader community, iMind members provide Mind with the financial support to achieve this. |

THE FACTS:
|
|
• One in five Australians will experience some form of mental illness each year.
|
Why should iMind?
The impact of mental illness on a person’s life can be devastating, it can lead to loss of friends, loss of job, loss of hope and loss of self-esteem and confidence - all things that you or I may take for granted. Mind works with people living in Australia, both young and old, to help overcome the shock, grief and severe disruption to life that comes with this loss. We support people to work to reconnect with family and friends and regain meaningful work in the community.
Recovery is possible
Recovery is about renewing hope for a rewarding future and setting goals to achieve this. It is about having the same things that most people want such as, relationships, jobs, education, personal achievements and being a valued member of the community.
Below are just a few examples of how your generous monthly contributions can help:
| $70 supports Mind’s research and development area to undertake vital studies into mental health |
$50 will assist a Mind worker to provide intensive support to someone who is moving back into the community |
$39 can help pay for a person with a mental illness to speak to school groups to raise awareness and encourage people to seek help early |
$20 can help support a young person who's life was disrupted by mental illness to return to study, gain a qualification and get a job. Five donors contributing $20 per month will fund a scholarship for one person for one year |
Your donation will be going to the following initiatives
Scholarship programs
This program provides funding to clients wishing to take up vocational studies so that they can pay for public transport, university books and tuition fees. The aim of this program is to support people to develop the skills to gain employment and meet new people.
Transition to independent living
Promoting healthy living and getting back to work are two elements that lead to an improved sense of self and deeper connections with the community. Funding for gym memberships, activity classes, clothing for job interviews and interview preparation are just a few examples. “I hope that by sharing my story I can help someone else’s life or save someone else’s life. I was at the point where life wasn’t worth living. I had so much negativity running through my mind, now I’m so optimistic, there’s more light at the end of the tunnel,” David, recipient of a gym membership through Mind’s Healthy Living program.
Ambassadors of Hope
The scale of mental illness in our community is larger than we may think and mostly emerges in adolescence or youth^. Ambassadors of Hope is a new initiative which aims to promote broad awareness, primarily amongst young people, by supporting people with a lived experience of mental illness to share their journey in public forums, such as schools and at organised events. This will be a far-reaching program that encourages people to seek help early and recognise that mental illness is not something to hide or be ashamed of. ^ National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission, A Healthier Future For All Australians - Interim Report DECEMBER 2008, ACT, pg.237.
iMind reaches 500....Thank you to all who have recently joined our iMind regular giving program. We have reached our 500th member, all of whom will significantly assist Mind to develop and implement new initiatives which assist people who are affected by mental illness. Initiatives such as Ambassadors of Hope, which aims to raise awareness in schools and encourage people to seek help early if needed. This is achieved through people who have accessed Mind’s services speaking about their journey with mental illness and the benefits of seeking professional assistance. The support recieved through iMind will also go towards our scholarship program which provides individuals whose lives were disrupted by mental illness a chance to return to study, gain a qualification and hopefully lead towards employment. Again we are very grateful of this support and should you have any queries about iMind feel free to call Chris or Kelly on 03 9455 7900.
